Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 1.10

देवा ह वै मृत्योरबिभयुः — ते त्रयीं विद्यां प्रविशन् । ते छन्दोभिरात्मानमाच्छादयन् । यदेभिरात्मानमाच्छादयन् तच्छन्दसां छन्दस्त्वम् ॥

deva ha vai mrityor abibhayuh — te trayim vidyam pravishan | te chhandobhir atmanam achchhadayan | yad ebhir atmanam achchhadayan tach chhandasam chhandastvom ||

The gods were afraid of Death. They entered the three Vedas as refuge. They covered themselves with the metres. Because they covered (chhand) themselves with these, the metres are called chhandas.

देवता मृत्यु से भयभीत हुए। उन्होंने त्रयी विद्या में प्रवेश लिया। उन्होंने छन्दों से अपने-आप को आच्छादित कर लिया। क्योंकि उन्होंने इनसे स्वयं को आच्छादित (छन्न) किया, इसीलिए छन्दों का नाम 'छन्दस्' है।
