Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 1.19

तं ह असुराः विदुः — अनेन वै न उद्गात्रातिगास्यन्तीति । तमभिद्रुत्य पाप्मनाविध्यन् । स यः स पाप्मा यदेवापसद्धं मनुते स एव स पाप्मा ।एवमु खल्वेता देवताः पाप्मभिरुपासृजन् एवमेनाः पाप्मनाविध्यन् ॥

tam ha asurah viduh — anena vai na udgatratiyasyantiti | tam abhidrutya papmanavidhyan | sa yah sa papma yad evapasaddham manute sa eva sa papma | evam u khalv eta devatah papmabhir upasrijan evam enah papmana avidhyan ||

The Asuras knew: 'Through this singer they will overcome us.' They rushed upon it and pierced it with evil. The evil that consists in thinking what is improper — that is that evil. Thus they overwhelmed these deities with evil, thus they pierced them with evil.

असुरों ने जाना: 'इस गायक से ये हम पर विजय पाएँगे।' उस पर दौड़े और पाप से बींध दिया। जो पाप है — अनुचित मानना — वही वह पाप है। इस प्रकार उन्होंने उन देवताओं को पाप से आवृत किया, पाप से बींध दिया।
