Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 1.27

ते ह देवा ऊचुः — एतावद्वा इदं सर्वं यदन्नम् । तदात्मनऽआकुर्वत । तस्मादपानेनान्नमत्ति — प्राणो ह्येषामात्मा ॥

te ha deva uchuh — etavad va idam sarvam yad annam | tad atmana akurvata | tasmad apanenannnam atti — prano hy esham atma ||

The gods said: 'So much indeed is this whole universe — namely food.' They made it a part of themselves. Therefore by the apana one eats food — for Prana is the self of these organs.

देवताओं ने कहा: 'इतना ही यह सम्पूर्ण जगत् है — जो अन्न है।' उन्होंने उसे अपना बना लिया। इसीलिए अपान से अन्न खाया जाता है — क्योंकि प्राण ही इन इन्द्रियों की आत्मा है।
