Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 1.39

सोऽबिभेत् तस्मादेकाकी बिभेति । स हायमीक्षां चक्रे — यन्मदन्यन्नास्ति कस्मान्नु बिभेमीति — तत एवास्य भयं वीयाय — कस्माद्ध्यभेष्यत् — द्वितीयाद्वै भयं भवति ॥

so'bibhet tasmad ekaki bibheti | sa hayam iksham chakre — yan mad anyam nasti kasman nu bibhemiti — tata evasya bhayam viyaya — kasmad dhy abheshyat — dvitiyad vai bhayam bhavati ||

He was afraid. Therefore one who is alone is afraid. He reflected: 'Since there is nothing other than myself, of what am I afraid?' Thereupon his fear departed. For what should he have feared? It is from a second entity that fear arises.

वह भयभीत हो गया। इसीलिए अकेला व्यक्ति भयभीत होता है। उसने विचार किया: 'मेरे अतिरिक्त कुछ नहीं है — तो मैं किससे डरूँ?' तब उसका भय चला गया। क्योंकि भय सदा द्वितीय से ही होता है।
