Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 1.5

स त्रेधात्मानं व्यकुरुत — आदित्यं तृतीयं वायुं तृतीयम् । स एष प्राणस्त्रेधा विहितः । तस्य प्राची दिक्शिरः । असौ चासौ चेर्मौ । अथास्य प्रतीची दिक्पुच्छम् । असौ चासौ च सक्थ्यौ । दक्षिणा चोदीची च पार्श्वे । द्यौः पृष्ठम् । अन्तरिक्षमुदरम् । इयमुरः ॥

sa tredhatmanam vyakuruta — adityam tritiyam vayum tritiyam | sa esha pranas tredha vihitah | tasya prachi dik shirah | asau chasau chermau | athasya pratichi dik puchchham | asau chasau cha sakthyau | dakshina chodichi cha parshve | dyauh prishtham | antariksham udaram | iyam urah ||

He divided himself threefold — the sun as one-third, the air as one-third. He is Prana divided threefold. His head is the east; his arms are the north-east and south-east. His tail is the west; his two thighs are the north-west and south-west. His sides are the south and the north. His back is heaven; his belly is the sky; his chest is the earth.

उसने स्वयं को तीन भागों में विभक्त किया — एक तृतीयांश आदित्य, एक तृतीयांश वायु। वह यह प्राण तीन रूपों में विहित है। उसका शिर पूर्व दिशा है; उत्तर-पूर्व और दक्षिण-पूर्व दोनों भुजाएँ हैं। पश्चिम पूँछ है; उत्तर-पश्चिम और दक्षिण-पश्चिम दोनों जाँघें हैं। दक्षिण और उत्तर पार्श्व हैं। द्यौ पृष्ठ है, अन्तरिक्ष उदर है, पृथिवी वक्षस्थल है।
