Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 2.32

स होवाच | न वा अरे पत्युः कामाय पतिः प्रियो भवति | आत्मनस्तु कामाय पतिः प्रियो भवति | न वा अरे जायायै कामाय जाया प्रिया भवति | आत्मनस्तु कामाय जाया प्रिया भवति | न वा अरे पुत्राणां कामाय पुत्राः प्रिया भवन्ति | आत्मनस्तु कामाय पुत्राः प्रिया भवन्ति ॥

sa hovacha | na va are patyuh kamaya patih priyo bhavati | atmanas tu kamaya patih priyo bhavati | na va are jayayai kamaya jaya priya bhavati | atmanas tu kamaya jaya priya bhavati | na va are putranam kamaya putrah priya bhavanti | atmanas tu kamaya putrah priya bhavanti ||

He said: 'Verily, not for the sake of the husband is the husband dear, but for the sake of the Self is the husband dear. Not for the sake of the wife is the wife dear, but for the sake of the Self is the wife dear. Not for the sake of the sons are the sons dear, but for the sake of the Self are the sons dear.'

उसने कहा: 'पत्नी पति को पति के लिए प्रिय नहीं होती — आत्मा के लिए पति प्रिय होता है। पति पत्नी को पत्नी के लिए प्रिय नहीं होता — आत्मा के लिए पत्नी प्रिय होती है। पुत्र, धन, देव, भूत — कोई भी किसी को उनके लिए प्रिय नहीं होता — आत्मा के लिए वे प्रिय होते हैं। इस आत्मा को देखना, सुनना, मनन करना और निदिध्यासन करना चाहिए। इस आत्मा को जानने से यह सब ज्ञात होता है।'
