Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 2.37

स यथा शङ्खस्य ध्मायमानस्य बाह्यान्शब्दान्न शक्नुयाद्ग्रहणाय | शङ्खस्य तु ग्रहणेन शङ्खध्मस्य वा शब्दो गृहीतः ॥

sa yatha shankhaya dhmayamanasya bahyan shabdan na shaknuyad grahanaya | shankhasya tu grahanena shankhadhamasya va shabdo grihitah ||

'As when a conch is blown, one cannot grasp the external sounds; but by grasping the conch or the blower of the conch, the sound is grasped.'

'जैसे फूँके जाते शंख के बाह्य ध्वनियों को नहीं पकड़ा जा सकता — किन्तु शंख को या शंख फूँकने वाले को पकड़ लेने पर ध्वनि पकड़ में आ जाती है — वैसे ही।'
