Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.10

कत्युद्गाताऽस्मिन्यज्ञे स्तोत्रियाणि स्तोष्यतीति | तिस्र इति | कतमास्तास्तिस्र इति | पुरोनुवाक्या च याज्या च शस्यैव तृतीया | कतमास्ता या अध्यात्ममिति | प्राणः एव पुरोनुवाक्या अपानो याज्या व्यानः शस्या | किं ताभिर्जयतीति | पृथिवीलोकमेव पुरोनुवाक्यया जयति अन्तरिक्षलोकं याज्यया द्युलोकं शस्ययेति | ततो ह होताश्वल उपरराम ॥

katy udgataa'smin yajne stotriyani stoshyatiti | tisra iti | katamas tas tisra iti | puronuvakya cha yajya cha shasyaiva tritiya | katamas ta ya adhyatmam iti | pranah eva puronuvakya apano yajya vyanah shasya | kim tabhir jayatiti | prithivilokam eva puronuvakya jayati antariksha lokam yajyaya dyulokam shasyayeti | tato ha hota ashvala upararama ||

'How many hymns of praise will the udgatri sing at this sacrifice?' 'Three.' 'Which are those three?' 'The introductory, the sacrificial, and the eulogy.' 'Which are those that relate to the body?' 'The prana is the introductory, the apana is the sacrificial, the vyana is the eulogy.' 'What does he win by these?' 'He wins the world of the earth by the introductory, the world of the sky by the sacrificial, the world of heaven by the eulogy.' Thereupon the hotri priest Ashvala held his peace.

'उद्गाता इस यज्ञ में कितने स्तोत्रिय गायन करेगा?' 'तीन।' 'वे तीन कौन से हैं?' 'पुरोनुवाक्या, याज्या, और तीसरी शस्या।' 'अध्यात्म-दृष्टि से वे कौन से हैं?' 'प्राण ही पुरोनुवाक्या है, अपान याज्या है, व्यान शस्या है।' 'इनसे वह क्या जीतता है?' 'पुरोनुवाक्या से पृथिवी-लोक को, याज्या से अन्तरिक्ष-लोक को, शस्या से द्युलोक को जीतता है।' इसके बाद होता अश्वल चुप हो गए।
