Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.27

स होवाच | वायुर्वै गौतम तत्सूत्रम् | वायुना वै गौतम सूत्रेणायं च लोकः परश्च लोकः सर्वाणि च भूतानि संदृब्धानि भवन्ति | तस्माद्वै गौतम पुरुषं प्रेतमाहुर्व्यस्रंसिषतास्यांगानीति | वायुना हि गौतम सूत्रेण संदृब्धानि भवन्तीति | एवमेतदित्यन्तर्यामिणं ब्रूहीति ॥

sa hovacha | vayur vai gautama tat sutram | vayuna vai gautama sutrenayam cha lokah parash cha lokah sarvani cha bhutani sandribdhani bhavanti | tasmad vai gautama purusham pretam ahur vyasramsishata asyangani iti | vayuna hi gautama sutrena sandribdhani bhavantiti | evam etad ity antaryaminam bruhiti ||

He said: 'Air, O Gautama, is that thread. By air as the thread, this world, the next world, and all beings are strung together. That is why, O Gautama, when a person dies, they say his limbs have become unstrung — for they are strung together by air as the thread.' 'Quite so. Now describe the Inner Controller.'

उन्होंने कहा — 'गौतम! वायु ही वह सूत्र है। वायु-रूपी सूत्र से ही यह लोक, परलोक और सब प्राणी बँधे हुए हैं। इसीलिए, गौतम! जब कोई व्यक्ति मरता है, तब कहते हैं — उसके अंग शिथिल हो गए — क्योंकि वायु-रूपी सूत्र से ही वे बँधे थे।' 'ऐसा ही है। अब अन्तर्यामी का वर्णन करो।'
