Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.55

एतस्य वा अक्षरस्य प्रशासने गार्गि प्राच्यो अन्या नद्यः स्यन्दन्ते श्वेतेभ्यः पर्वतेभ्यः प्रतीच्यो अन्या याम् याम् च दिशमनु | एतस्य वा अक्षरस्य प्रशासने गार्गि ददतो मनुष्याः प्रशंसन्ति यजमानं देवा दर्वीं पितरोऽन्वायत्ताः ॥

etasya va aksharasya prashashane gargi prachyo anya nadyah syandante shvetebhyah parvatebhyah pratichyo anya yam yam cha disham anu | etasya va aksharasya prashashane gargi dadato manushyah prashamsanti yajamanam deva darvim pitaro'nvayattah ||

'Under the mighty rule of this Imperishable, O Gargi, some rivers flow east from the white mountains, others west, each in its own direction. Under the mighty rule of this Imperishable, O Gargi, men praise the liberal, the gods depend on the sacrificer, and the ancestors depend on the offering spoon.'

'गार्गि! इसी अक्षर के शासन से कुछ नदियाँ श्वेत पर्वतों से पूर्व की ओर बहती हैं, और कुछ पश्चिम की ओर — हर एक अपनी दिशा में। इसी अक्षर के शासन से ही दानशील पुरुषों की मनुष्य प्रशंसा करते हैं, यजमान पर देवता आश्रित हैं, और दर्वी (आहुति-पात्र) पर पितर आश्रित हैं।'
