Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.63

कतमे रुद्रा इति | दशेमे पुरुषे प्राणा आत्मैकादशः | ते यदाऽस्माच्छरीरान्मर्त्यादुत्क्रामन्त्यथ रोदयन्ति तद्यद्रोदयन्ति तस्माद्रुद्रा इति ॥

katame rudra iti | dasheme purushe prana atmaaikadashah | te yadaa'smachchhariranmartyaad utkramantiy atha rodayanti tad yad rodayanti tasmad rudra iti ||

'Which are the Rudras?' 'The ten organs in the human body, with the mind as the eleventh. When they depart from this mortal body, they make people weep. Because they make them weep (rodayanti), they are called Rudras.'

'रुद्र कौन हैं?' 'पुरुष-शरीर के दस प्राण और ग्यारहवाँ आत्मा — जब वे इस मर्त्य शरीर से उत्क्रमण करते हैं, तब रुलाते हैं। चूँकि वे रुलाते हैं (रोदयन्ति), इसलिए रुद्र कहलाते हैं।'
