Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.7

अथ हैनमश्वलः पप्रच्छ | याज्ञवल्क्य कत्यृग्भिरद्य होताऽस्मिन्यज्ञे करिष्यतीति | तिसृभिरिति | कतमास्तास्तिस्र इति | पुरोनुवाक्या च याज्या च शस्यैव तृतीया | किं ताभिर्जयतीति | यत्किंचेदं प्राणभृदिति ॥

atha hainam ashvalah paprachchha | yajnavalkya katy rigbhir adya hota'smin yajne karishyatiti | tisribhir iti | katamas tas tisra iti | puronuvakya cha yajya cha shasyaiva tritiya | kim tabhir jayatiti | yat kinched idam pranabhrid iti ||

Then Ashvala asked: 'Yajnavalkya, with how many Rik verses will the hotri priest perform at this sacrifice today?' 'With three.' 'Which are those three?' 'The introductory verse, the sacrificial verse, and the eulogy as the third.' 'What does he win by these?' 'All that lives and breathes.'

फिर अश्वल ने पूछा — 'याज्ञवल्क्य! आज इस यज्ञ में होता कितनी ऋचाओं से कर्म करेगा?' 'तीन से।' 'वे तीन कौन सी हैं?' 'पुरोनुवाक्या, याज्या, और तीसरी शस्या।' 'इनसे वह क्या जीतता है?' 'जो कुछ भी प्राणधारी है — वह सब।'
