Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.8

कत्यध्वर्युरस्मिन्यज्ञेऽऽहुतीर्होष्यतीति | तिस्र इति | कतमास्तास्तिस्र इति | या हूयमाना उज्ज्वलन्ति या हूयमाना अतिनेदन्ते या हूयमाना अधिशेरते | किं ताभिर्जयतीति | या हूयमाना उज्ज्वलन्ति देवलोकमेव ताभिर्जयति | या हूयमाना अतिनेदन्ते पितृलोकम् | या हूयमाना अधिशेरते मनुष्यलोकम् ॥

katy adhvaryur asmin yajne ahutir hoshyatiti | tisra iti | katamas tas tisra iti | ya huyamana ujjvalanti ya huyamana atinedante ya huyamana adhisherate | kim tabhir jayatiti | ya huyamana ujjvalanti devalokam eva tabhir jayati | ya huyamana atinedante pitrilokam | ya huyamana adhisherate manushyalokam ||

'How many oblations will the adhvaryu offer at this sacrifice?' 'Three.' 'Which are those three?' 'Those which when offered blaze up, those which when offered overflow, and those which when offered sink down.' 'What does he win by these?' 'By those that blaze up he wins the world of the gods; by those that overflow, the world of the ancestors; by those that sink down, the world of humans.'

'अध्वर्यु इस यज्ञ में कितनी आहुतियाँ देगा?' 'तीन।' 'वे तीन कौन सी हैं?' 'जो आहुतियाँ हवन करने पर ज्वलित होती हैं, जो हवन करने पर अत्यन्त गर्जना करती हैं, और जो हवन करने पर बुझकर बैठ जाती हैं।' 'इनसे वह क्या जीतता है?' 'जो ज्वलित होती हैं उनसे देवलोक को जीतता है; जो गर्जती हैं उनसे पितृलोक को; जो बैठ जाती हैं उनसे मनुष्यलोक को।'
