Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.85
स होवाच याज्ञवल्क्यः | यो वै स पुरुषः प्रत्यक्षः साक्षात्स आत्मैव | कं नामात्मानमेनमनुपलभ्य मृत्योर्मुच्यते | स एष नेतीत्यात्मा | अगृह्यो न हि गृह्यते | अशीर्यो न हि शीर्यते | असङ्गो न हि सज्यते | असितो न व्यथते न रिष्यति | एतमात्मानं वेद | नैनं कृताकृते तपतः ॥
sa hovacha yajnavalkyah | yo vai sa purushah pratyakshah sakshat sa atmaiva | kam namatmanam enam anupalabhya mrityoh muchyate | sa esha netity atma | agrihyo na hi grihyate | ashiryo na hi shiryate | asango na hi sajyate | asito na vyathate na rishyati | etam atmanam veda | nainam kritakrite tapatah ||
Yajnavalkya said: 'That person who is directly perceived is the Self itself. By realizing this Self one is freed from death. This Self is described as "not this, not this" (neti neti). It is ungraspable, for it cannot be grasped. It is indestructible, for it cannot be destroyed. It is unattached, for it does not attach itself. It is unfettered — it does not suffer, it is not injured. He who knows this Self — what has been done and what has not been done do not afflict him.'
याज्ञवल्क्य ने कहा — 'जो यह पुरुष प्रत्यक्ष-साक्षात् है — वह आत्मा ही है। उस आत्मा को पाकर ही मनुष्य मृत्यु से छूटता है। यह आत्मा 'नेति, नेति' से ही कहा जाता है — वह अग्राह्य है, अशीर्य है, असङ्ग है, अबद्ध है। जो इस आत्मा को जान लेता है — उसे न किया हुआ, न नहीं किया हुआ — कुछ भी सन्तप्त नहीं करता।'
