Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.87

विदग्धः शाकल्यो अतिपप्रच्छ | याज्ञवल्क्य इति होवाच | यत्प्राचीनां दिशां देवता तां मे ब्रूहीति | आदित्य इति | स आदित्यः कस्मिन्प्रतिष्ठित इति | चक्षुषीति | चक्षुः कस्मिन्प्रतिष्ठितमिति | रूपेष्विति | रूपाणि कस्मिन्प्रतिष्ठितानीति | हृदये इति | तस्मात्त्वं सर्वत्र प्रतिष्ठितमाहुः हृदयमिति ॥

vidagdhah shakalyo atipaprachchha | yajnavalkya iti hovacha | yat prachinam disham devata tam me bruhiti | aditya iti | sa adityah kasmin pratishthita iti | chakshushiti | chakshuh kasmin pratishthitam iti | rupeshv iti | rupani kasmin pratishthitaniti | hridaye iti | tasmat tvam sarvatra pratishthitam ahuh hridayam iti ||

Vidagdha Shakalya questioned further: 'Yajnavalkya, tell me the deity of the eastern quarter.' 'The sun.' 'In what is the sun established?' 'In the eye.' 'In what is the eye established?' 'In forms.' 'In what are forms established?' 'In the heart.' Therefore they say the heart is the foundation of all.'

विदग्ध शाकल्य ने पुनः पूछा — 'याज्ञवल्क्य! पूर्व दिशा की देवता मुझे बताइए।' 'आदित्य।' 'वह किसमें प्रतिष्ठित?' 'चक्षु में।' 'चक्षु?' 'रूपों में।' 'रूप?' 'हृदय में।' इसी से कहते हैं — हृदय ही सबकी प्रतिष्ठा है।
