Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 4.21

तद्यथास्मिन्नाकाशे शकुनिः परिपतेत् एवमेवायं पुरुषः इमावन्तावनुसञ्चरन्नात्मानं न विन्दति स्वप्नान्तं च बुद्धान्तं च ॥

tad yathaasmin aakashe shakunih paripatat evam evaayam purushah imaav antaav anusancharan aatmaanam na vindati svapnaantam cha buddhaantam cha

'Just as a bird flies about in space, even so does this person, moving between the two states — the dream state and the waking state — not finding his Self.'

'जैसे आकाश में पक्षी चारों ओर उड़ता है — वैसे ही यह पुरुष इन दोनों अन्तों — स्वप्नान्त और बुद्धान्त (जाग्रत्) — में विचरण करते हुए (सच्चे) आत्मा को नहीं पा पाता।'
