Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 4.22

तद्यथा महामत्स्य उभे कूले अनुसञ्चरति पूर्वं चापरं चैवमेवायं पुरुष एताव् उभाव् अन्तौ अनुसञ्चरति स्वप्नान्तं च बुद्धान्तं च ॥

tad yathaa mahaamatsya ubhe kuule anusancharati puurvam chaaparam chaivm evaayam purusha etaav ubhaav antau anusancharati svapnaantam cha buddhaantam cha

Just as a great fish moves along both banks of a river, the eastern and the western, even so does this person move between the two states — the state of dreaming and the state of waking.

जैसे महामत्स्य (बड़ी मछली) नदी के दोनों कूलों — पूर्व और पश्चिम — में विचरण करती है, वैसे ही यह पुरुष इन दोनों अन्तों — स्वप्न और जाग्रत् — में विचरण करता है।
