Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 4.60

यदा सुषुप्तो भवति ननेन किञ्चन वेदि तद्यथा प्राज्ञेन आत्मना सम्परिष्वक्तो भवति स एष नेतीत्यात्मा अगृह्योऽयमात्मा न हि गृह्यतेऽशीर्योऽयमात्मा न हि शीर्यतेऽसङ्गोऽयमात्मा न हि सज्यतेऽसितोऽयमात्मा न व्यथते न रिष्यति ॥

yadaa sushuptuo bhavati nanena kinchana vedi tad yathaa praajnena aatmanaa samparishvakto bhavati sa esha netiity aatmaa agrihyo'yam aatmaa na hi grihyate'shiiryo'yam aatmaa na hi shiirya te'sango'yam aatmaa na hi sajyate'sito'yam aatmaa na vyathate na rishyati

When one is in deep sleep, one does not know anything at all. That is because one is embraced by the intelligent Self. This Self is described as 'not this, not this' (neti neti). This Self is ungraspable, for it cannot be grasped. It is indestructible, for it cannot be destroyed. It is unattached, for it does not attach itself. It is unfettered — it does not suffer, it is not injured.

जब वह सुषुप्त होता है, तब उसे कुछ भी नहीं भासता — क्योंकि वह प्राज्ञ-आत्मा से आलिङ्गित होता है। यह आत्मा 'नेति, नेति' (यह नहीं, यह नहीं) से ही कहा जाता है। यह आत्मा अग्राह्य है — गृहीत नहीं हो सकता; अशीर्य है — क्षीण नहीं होता; असङ्ग है — लिप्त नहीं होता; अबद्ध है — व्यथित नहीं होता, क्षति नहीं उठाता।
