Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 4.81

विज्ञातारमरे केन विजानीयात् स एष नेति नेत्यात्मा अगृह्यो न हि गृह्यतेऽशीर्यो न हि शीर्यतेऽसङ्गो न हि सज्यतेऽसितो न व्यथते न रिष्यति ॥

vijnaataaram are kena vijaaniiyaat sa esha neti nety aatmaa agrihyo na hi grihyate'shiiryo na hi shiirya te'sango na hi sajyate'sito na vyathate na rishyati

'Through what, O Maitreyi, should one know the Knower? This Self is That which has been described as "not this, not this" (neti neti). It is ungraspable, for it cannot be grasped. It is indestructible, for it cannot be destroyed. It is unattached, for it does not attach itself. It is unfettered — it does not suffer, it is not injured.'

'मैत्रेयि! विज्ञाता को (स्वयं को) किसके द्वारा कोई जाने? यह वह आत्मा है — 'नेति, नेति' (यह नहीं, यह नहीं) से ही कहा जाता है। वह अग्राह्य है, क्योंकि गृहीत नहीं हो सकता; अशीर्य है, क्योंकि क्षीण नहीं होता; असङ्ग है, क्योंकि लिप्त नहीं होता; अबद्ध है — व्यथित नहीं होता, क्षति नहीं उठाता।'
