Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 5.22

भूमिरन्तरिक्शं द्यौरित्यष्टावक्शराणि; अष्टाक्शरं ह वा एकं गायत्र्यै पदम्; एतद्ध वा अस्या एतत्; स यावदेषु त्रिषु लोकेषु तावद्ध जयति, यो'स्या एतदेवं पदं वेद ॥

bhumirantariksham dyaurityashtaavaksharaani; ashtaaksharam ha vaa ekam gaayatryai padam; etaddha vaa asyaa etat; sa yaavad eshu trishu lokeshu taavaddha jayati, yo'syaa etadevam padam veda

Earth, sky, and heaven — these comprise eight syllables. The first foot of the Gayatri has eight syllables. These three worlds constitute that first foot. One who knows this foot of the Gayatri wins as much as there is in these three worlds.

‘भूमि, अन्तरिक्ष, द्यौ’ — ये आठ अक्षर हैं। आठ अक्षर ही गायत्री का एक पाद है। यही उसका वह पाद है। जो उसके इस पाद को इस प्रकार जानता है, वह इन तीनों लोकों में जितना है, उतना जीत लेता है।
