Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 6.23

इयं वाव गौतमाग्निः; तस्याः सम्वत्सर एव समित्, आकाशो धूमः, रात्रिरर्चिः, दिशोऽङ्गाराः, अवान्तरदिशो विस्फुलिङ्गाः; तस्मिन्नेतस्मिन्नग्नौ देवा वृष्टिं जुह्वति; तस्या आहुतेरन्नं सम्भवति ॥

iyam vaava gautamaagnih; tasyaah samvatsara eva samit, aakaasho dhuumah, raatrirarchiih, disho'ngaaraah, avaantaradisho visphullingaah; tasminnetasminagnau devaa vrishtim juhvati; tasyaa aahuterannam sambhavati

The third fire is the earth, O Gautama. The year is its fuel, the sky its smoke, night its flame, the quarters its embers, and the intermediate quarters its sparks. In this fire the gods offer rain. From that offering, food arises.

हे गौतम! यह तीसरा अग्नि पृथिवी है। संवत्सर उसकी समिधा है, आकाश धूम, रात्रि ज्वाला, दिशाएँ अंगार, और अवान्तर दिशाएँ विस्फुलिङ्ग हैं। उस अग्नि में देव वृष्टि की आहुति देते हैं। उस आहुति से अन्न उत्पन्न होता है।
