Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 6.29

अथ य इमे ग्राम इष्टापूर्ते दत्तमित्युपासते, ते धूममभिसम्भवन्ति; धूमाद्रात्रिम्, रात्रेरपरपक्शम्, अपरपक्शाद्यान् षण्मासान् दक्शिणादित्य एति; मासेभ्यः पितृलोकम्, पितृलोकाच्चन्द्रमसम्; ते चन्द्रमसं प्राप्यान्नं भवन्ति; तांस्तत्र देवा यथा सोमं राजानं आप्यायस्वापक्शीयस्वेत्येवमेनांस्तत्र भक्शयन्ति; तेषां यदा तत्पर्यवैति अथेमं आकाशमभिनिष्पद्यन्ते; आकाशाद्वायुम्, वायोर्वृष्टिम्, वृष्टेः पृथिवीम्; ते पृथिवीं प्राप्यान्नं भवन्ति; ते पुनः पुरुषाग्नौ हूयन्ते, ततो योषाग्नौ जायन्ते; ते लोकानभ्युत्तिष्ठन्ति — एवमेवानुपरिवर्तन्ते ॥

atha ya ime graama ishtaapuurte dattamityupaasate, te dhuumamabhisambhavanti; dhuumaadraatrim, raatreraparapaksham, aparapakshaadyaan shanmaasaan dakshinaaditya eti; maasebhyah pitrilokam, pitrilokaacchandramasam; te chandramasam praapyaannam bhavanti; taanstatra devaa yathaa somam raajaanam aapyaayasvaapakshiyasvetyevamenaanstatra bhakshayanti; teshaam yadaa tatparyavaiti athemam aakaashamabhinishpadyante; aakaashaadvaayum, vaayorvrishtim, vrishtheh prithiviim; te prithiviim praapyaannam bhavanti; te punah purushaagnau huuyante, tato yoshaagnau jaayante; te lokaanabhyuttishthanti — evamevaanuparivartante

But those who, living in the village, practise sacrifices, charitable works, and austerity — they pass into the smoke. From smoke into the night, from night into the dark fortnight, from the dark fortnight into the six months when the sun travels southward, from those months into the world of the ancestors, from the world of the ancestors into the moon. Reaching the moon, they become food. There the gods consume them, just as they consume King Soma, saying 'Increase! Decrease!' When their merit is exhausted, they pass into this space, from space into air, from air into rain, from rain into the earth. Reaching the earth, they become food. They are again offered in the fire of man and born in the fire of woman. Thus they rise to the worlds and go round again in the same way.

और जो ग्राम में रहकर इष्ट-पूर्त-दत्त (यज्ञ-कूप-दान) की उपासना करते हैं, वे धूम में पहुँचते हैं। धूम से रात्रि में, रात्रि से कृष्णपक्ष में, कृष्णपक्ष से दक्षिणायन के छह मासों में, मासों से पितृलोक में, पितृलोक से चन्द्रमा में पहुँचते हैं। वहाँ चन्द्रमा को प्राप्त होकर वे अन्न बन जाते हैं। वहाँ देव उन्हें ‘बढ़ो! घटो!’ कहकर सोम राजा की भाँति भोग करते हैं। जब उनका यह कर्म-फल समाप्त हो जाता है, तब वे आकाश में प्रकट होते हैं — आकाश से वायु में, वायु से वृष्टि में, वृष्टि से पृथिवी में। पृथिवी पर पहुँचकर वे अन्न बन जाते हैं। वे फिर पुरुष-रूप अग्नि में आहुत होते हैं, फिर स्त्री-रूप अग्नि में जन्म लेते हैं। इस प्रकार वे लोकों में उठते हैं — और इस प्रकार चक्र में पुनः-पुनः परिवर्तन करते रहते हैं।
