Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 6.31

om. tadya itthamanashanam vasatiityaachakshate, na ha vai tadbrahmanho mahimnaa annamanashnatyenam praano jahaati; tatpraanam, atho vaasishthameava bhavatyadvasati; etatkhlu mahat, etat pavitram, ya evamupaasate

Om. Now they say of a person who does not eat, 'He is observing a fast.' But truly, the vital force does not leave one through the greatness of Brahman when one does not eat food. That is the Prana; that is the most excellent — it is the abode. This is indeed great; this is purifying for one who meditates thus.
