Chandogya Upanishad 1.24

अथाधिदैवतं य एवासौ तपति तमुद्गीथमुपासीतोद्यन्वा एष प्रजाभ्य उद्गायति । उद्यꣳ स्तमो भयमपहन्त्यपहन्ता ह वै भयस्य तमसो भवति य एवं वेद ॥ १ ॥

1.3.1 — athadhidaivatam ya evasau tapati tamudgithamupasitodyanva esha prajabhya udgayati | udyam stamo bhayamapahantyapahanta ha vai bhayasya tamaso bhavati ya evam veda || 1 ||

Now follows the meditation on the udgîtha with reference to the gods. Let a man meditate on the udgîtha (Om) as he who sends warmth (the sun in the sky). When the sun rises it sings as Udgâtri for the sake of all creatures. When it rises it destroys the fear of darkness. He who knows this, is able to destroy the fear of darkness (ignorance).

अब अधिदैवत — जो तप्त होता है, वह सूर्य उद्गीथ है; ऐसी उसकी उपासना करें। उदयमान होकर वह प्रजा के लिए उद्गान करता है, उदय-मात्र से तम और भय को हर लेता है; जो ऐसा जानता है, वह भय और तम का हर्ता (नाशक) बनता है।
