Chandogya Upanishad 1.26

अथ खलु व्यानमेवोद्गीथमुपासीत यद्वै प्राणिति स प्राणो यदपानिति सोऽपानः । अथ यः प्राणापानयोः सन्धिः स व्यानो यो व्यानः सा वाक् । तस्मादप्राणन्ननपानन्वाचमभिव्याहरति ॥ ३ ॥

1.3.3 — atha khalu vyanamevodgithamupasita yadvai praniti sa prano yadapaniti so'panah | atha yah pranapanayoh sandhih sa vyano yo vyanah sa vak | tasmadapranannanapananvachamabhivyaharati || 3 ||

Then let a man meditate on the udgîtha (Om) as vyâna indeed. If we breathe up, that is prâna, the up-breathing. If we breathe down, that is apâna, the down-breathing. The combination of prâna and apâna is vyâna, back-breathing or holding in of the breath. This vyâna is speech. Therefore when we utter speech, we neither breathe up nor down.

अथवा व्यान की ही उद्गीथ-रूप में उपासना करें। जो ऊर्ध्व-श्वास है वह प्राण है; जो अधो-श्वास है वह अपान है; और जो प्राण-अपान की सन्धि है, वही व्यान है। जो व्यान है, वही वाक् है — इसीलिए बोलते समय हम न प्राण खींचते हैं, न अपान छोड़ते हैं।
