Chandogya Upanishad 1.27

या वाक्सर्क्तस्मादप्राणन्ननपानन्नृचमभिव्याहरति यर्क्तत्साम तस्मादप्राणन्ननपानन्साम गायति यत्साम स उद्गीथस्तस्मादप्राणन्ननपानन्नुद्गायति ॥ ४ ॥

1.3.4 — ya vaksarktasmadapranannanapanannrichamabhivyaharati yarktatsama tasmadapranannanapanansama gayati yatsama sa udgithastasmadapranannanapanannudgayati || 4 ||

The Ric is speech. Therefore one utters the Ric without in-bieathing, without out-breathing. The Saman is the Ric. Therefore one sings the Saman without in-breathing, without out-breathing. The Udgitha is the Saman. Therefore one chants the Udgitha without in-breathing, without out- breathing.

जो वाक् है, वही ऋक् है; अतः ऋक् का उच्चारण बिना प्राण-अपान के होता है। जो ऋक् है, वही साम है; अतः साम-गान भी बिना प्राण-अपान के होता है। जो साम है, वही उद्गीथ है; अतः उद्गान भी बिना प्राण-अपान के होता है।
