Chandogya Upanishad 1.37

देवा वै मृत्योर्बिभ्यतस्त्रयीं विद्यां प्राविशꣳस्ते छन्दोभिरच्छादयन्यदेभिरच्छादयꣳस्तच्छन्दसां छन्दस्त्वम् ॥ २ ॥

1.4.2 — deva vai mrityorbibhyatastrayim vidyam pravishamste chhandobhirachchhadayanyadebhirachchhadayamstachchhandasam chhandastvam || 2 ||

The Devas, being afraid of death, entered upon (the performance of the sacrifice prescribed in) the threefold knowledge (the three Vedas). They covered themselves with the metrical hymns. Because they covered (khad) themselves with the hymns, therefore the hymns are called khandas.

देव मृत्यु से भयभीत होकर त्रयी-विद्या में प्रविष्ट हुए; उन्होंने छन्दों से अपने को आच्छादित कर लिया। जिन छन्दों से उन्होंने आच्छादन किया, छन्दों का छन्दस्त्व (छन्द-स्वरूप) उसी से है।
