Chandogya Upanishad 1.39

यदा वा ऋचमाप्नोत्योमित्येवातिस्वरत्येवꣳ सामैवं यजुरेष उ स्वरो यदेतदक्षरमेतदमृतमभयं तत्प्रविश्य देवा अमृता अभया अभवन् ॥ ४ ॥

1.4.4 — yada va richamapnotyomityevatisvaratyevam samaivam yajuresha u svaro yadetadaksharametadamritamabhayam tatpravishya deva amrita abhaya abhavan || 4 ||

When a man has mastered the Rig-veda, he says quite loud Om; the same, when he has mastered the Sâman and the Yagus. This Svara is the imperishable (syllable), the immortal, free from fear. Because the Devas entered it, therefore they became immortal, and free from fear.

जब भी कोई ऋक् की समाप्ति पर होता है, वह 'ओम्' कहकर ही उच्च स्वर से उच्चारण करता है — वैसे ही साम की, और वैसे ही यजुष् की समाप्ति पर। यही स्वर वह अक्षर है — अमृत और अभय; उसमें प्रवेश करके ही देव अमृत और अभय हुए।
