Chandogya Upanishad 1.46

इयमेवर्गग्निः साम तदेतदेतस्यामृच्यध्यूढꣳ साम तस्मादृच्यध्यूढꣳ साम गीयत इयमेव साग्निरमस्तत्साम ॥ १ ॥

1.6.1 — iyamevargagnih sama tadetadetasyamrichyadhyudham sama tasmadrichyadhyudham sama giyata iyameva sagniramastatsama || 1 ||

The Rik (veda) is this earth, the Sâman (veda) is fire. This Sâman (fire) rests on that Rik (earth). Therefore the Sâman is sung as resting on the Rik. ​Sâ is this earth, ama is fire, and that makes Sâma.

यह पृथ्वी ही ऋक् है, अग्नि साम है; यह साम उस ऋक् पर आश्रित है। इसीलिए साम ऋक् पर अध्यूढ़ होकर गाया जाता है। 'सा' पृथ्वी है, 'अम' अग्नि है — दोनों मिलकर 'साम' बनते हैं।
