Chandogya Upanishad 1.47

अन्तरिक्षमेवर्ग्वायुः साम तदेतदेतस्यामृच्यध्यूढꣳ साम तस्मादृच्यध्यूढꣳ साम गीयतेऽन्तरिक्षमेव सा वायुरमस्तत्साम ॥ २ ॥

1.6.2 — antarikshamevargvayuh sama tadetadetasyamrichyadhyudham sama tasmadrichyadhyudham sama giyate'ntarikshameva sa vayuramastatsama || 2 ||

The Rik is the sky, the Sâman air. This Sâman (air) rests on that Rik (sky). Therefore the Sâman is sung as resting on the Rik. Sâ is the sky, ama the air, and that makes Sâma.

अन्तरिक्ष ऋक् है, वायु साम है; यह साम उस ऋक् पर आश्रित है। इसीलिए साम ऋक् पर अध्यूढ़ होकर गाया जाता है। 'सा' अन्तरिक्ष है, 'अम' वायु है — दोनों मिलकर 'साम' बनते हैं।
