Chandogya Upanishad 1.55

चक्षुरेवर्गात्मा साम तदेतदेतस्यामृच्यध्यूढꣳ साम तस्मादृच्यध्यूढꣳ साम गीयते चक्षुरेव सात्मामस्तत्साम ॥ २ ॥

1.7.2 — chakshurevargatma sama tadetadetasyamrichyadhyudham sama tasmadrichyadhyudham sama giyate chakshureva satmamastatsama || 2 ||

Rik is the eye, Sâman the self. This Sâman (shadow) rests on that Rik (eye). Therefore the Sâman is sung as resting on the Rik. Sâ is the eye, ama the self, and that makes Sâma.

चक्षु ऋक् है, आत्मा (यहाँ छाया-स्थानीय प्रतिबिम्ब) साम है; यह साम उस ऋक् पर आश्रित है। इसीलिए साम ऋक् पर अध्यूढ़ होकर गाया जाता है। 'सा' चक्षु है, 'अम' आत्मा है — दोनों मिलकर 'साम' बनते हैं।
