Chandogya Upanishad 1.56

श्रोत्रमेवर्ङ्मनः साम तदेतदेतस्यामृच्यध्यूढꣳ साम तस्मादृच्यध्यूढꣳ साम गीयते श्रोत्रमेव सा मनोऽमस्तत्साम ॥ ३ ॥

1.7.3 — shrotramevarnmanah sama tadetadetasyamrichyadhyudham sama tasmadrichyadhyudham sama giyate shrotrameva sa mano'mastatsama || 3 ||

Rik is the ear, Sâman the mind. This Sâman (mind) rests on that Rik (ear). Therefore the Sâman is sung as resting on the Rik. Sâ is the ear, ama the mind, and that makes Sâma.

श्रोत्र ऋक् है, मन साम है; यह साम उस ऋक् पर आश्रित है। इसीलिए साम ऋक् पर अध्यूढ़ होकर गाया जाता है। 'सा' श्रोत्र है, 'अम' मन है — दोनों मिलकर 'साम' बनते हैं।
