Chandogya Upanishad 1.57

अथ यदेतदक्ष्णः शुक्लं भाः सैवर्गथ यन्नीलं परः कृष्णं तत्साम तदेतदेतस्यामृच्यध्यूढꣳ साम तस्मादृच्यध्यूढꣳ साम गीयते अथ यदेवैतदक्ष्णः शुक्लं भाः सैव साथ यन्नीलं परः कृष्णं तदमस्तत्साम ॥ ४ ॥

1.7.4 — atha yadetadakshnah shuklam bhah saivargatha yannilam parah krishnam tatsama tadetadetasyamrichyadhyudham sama tasmadrichyadhyudham sama giyate atha yadevaitadakshnah shuklam bhah saiva satha yannilam parah krishnam tadamastatsama || 4 ||

Rik is the white light of the eye, Sâman the blue exceeding darkness. This Sâman (darkness) rests on the Rik (brightness). Therefore the Sâman is sung as resting on the Rik. Sâ is the white light of the eye, ama the blue exceeding darkness, and that makes Sâma.

चक्षु की जो शुक्ल भा है, वह ऋक् है; और जो नीला तथा अत्यन्त कृष्ण अंश है, वह साम है। यह साम उस ऋक् पर आश्रित है। चक्षु की जो शुक्ल भा है, वह 'सा' है; और जो नीला तथा अत्यन्त कृष्ण है, वह 'अम' है — दोनों मिलकर 'साम' बनते हैं।
