Chandogya Upanishad 2.22

तस्मिन्निमानि सर्वाणि भूतान्यन्वायत्तानीति विद्यात्तस्य यत्पुरोदयात्स हिङ्कारस्तदस्य पशवोऽन्वायत्तास्तस्मात्ते हिङ्कुर्वन्ति हिङ्कारभाजिनो ह्येतस्य साम्नः ॥ २ ॥

2.9.2 — tasminnimani sarvani bhutanyanvayattaniti vidyattasya yatpurodayatsa hinkarastadasya pashavo'nvayattastasmatte hinkurvanti hinkarabhajino hyetasya samnah || 2 ||

Let him know that all beings are dependent on him (the sun). What he is before his rising, that is the hinkâra. On it animals are dependent. Therefore animals say hin (before sunrise), for they share the hinkâra of that Sâman (the sun).

सब प्राणी उसी पर अनुवर्ती (आश्रित) हैं, यह जान लेना चाहिए। उदय से पूर्व का उसका जो रूप है, वह हिङ्कार है; उस पर पशु अनुवर्ती हैं — इसीलिए वे (प्रातःकाल उदय से पूर्व) 'हिं' करते हैं; वे इस साम के हिङ्कारभाजी हैं।
