Chandogya Upanishad 5.46

अथ य इमे ग्राम इष्टापूर्ते दत्तमित्युपासते ते धूममभिसम्भवन्ति धूमाद्रात्रिँ रात्रेरपरपक्षमपरपक्षाद्यान्षड्दक्षिणैति मासाँस्तान्नैते संवत्सरमभिप्राप्नुवन्ति ॥ ३ ॥

5.10.3 — atha ya ime grama ishtapurte dattamityupasate te dhumamabhisambhavanti dhumadratrin ratreraparapakshamaparapakshadyanshaddakshinaiti masanstannaite samvatsaramabhiprapnuvanti || 3 ||

'But they who living in a village practise (a life of) sacrifices, works of public utility, and alms, they go to the smoke, from smoke to night, from night to the dark half of the moon, from the dark half of the moon to the six months when the sun goes to the south. But they do not reach the year.

'अब जो ग्राम में रहकर इष्ट-पूर्त-दत्त की उपासना करते हैं, वे धूम को प्राप्त होते हैं; धूम से रात्रि को; रात्रि से अपर-पक्ष को; अपर-पक्ष से उन छह मासों को जिनमें सूर्य दक्षिण में जाता है। किन्तु वे संवत्सर तक नहीं पहुँचते।'
