Chandogya Upanishad 6.16

यदग्ने रोहितँरूपं तेजसस्तद्रूपं यच्छुक्लं तदपां यत्कृष्णं तदन्नस्यापागादग्नेरग्नित्वं वाचारम्भणं विकारो नामधेयं त्रीणि रूपाणीत्येव सत्यम् ॥ १ ॥

6.4.1 — yadagne rohitanrupam tejasastadrupam yachchhuklam tadapam yatkrishnam tadannasyapagadagneragnitvam vacharambhanam vikaro namadheyam trini rupanityeva satyam || 1 ||

'The red colour of burning fire (agni) is the colour of fire, the white colour of fire is the colour of water, the black colour of fire the colour of earth. Thus vanishes what we call fire, as a mere variety, being a name, arising from speech. What is true (satya) are the three colours (or forms).

'अग्नि का जो लाल रूप है वह तेज का रूप है, जो श्वेत है वह जल का, और जो कृष्ण है वह अन्न का। इस प्रकार अग्नि का अग्नित्व विलीन हो जाता है — विकार वाणी का आरम्भ है, नाममात्र है; सत्य तो केवल ये तीन रूप हैं।'
