Chandogya Upanishad 6.53

अस्य यदेकाँ शाखां जीवो जहात्यथ सा शुष्यति द्वितीयां जहात्यथ सा शुष्यति तृतीयां जहात्यथ सा शुष्यति सर्वं जहाति सर्वः शुष्यत्येवमेव खलु सोम्य विद्धीति होवाच ॥ २ ॥

6.11.2 — asya yadekan shakham jivo jahatyatha sa shushyati dvitiyam jahatyatha sa shushyati tritiyam jahatyatha sa shushyati sarvam jahati sarvah shushyatyevameva khalu somya viddhiti hovacha || 2 ||

'But if the life (the living Self) leaves one of its branches, that branch withers; if it leaves at second, that branch withers; if it leaves a third, that branch withers. If it leaves the whole tree, the whole tree withers. In exactly the same manner, my son, know this.' Thus he spoke:

'जब जीव उसकी एक शाखा को त्याग देता है, वह शाखा सूख जाती है; दूसरी को त्यागे, वह सूख जाती है; तीसरी को त्यागे, वह सूख जाती है; यदि समस्त को त्यागे तो समस्त वृक्ष सूख जाता है। हे सौम्य, इसी प्रकार जान' — ऐसा उसने कहा।
