Chandogya Upanishad 7.34

प्राणो वा आशाया भूयान्यथा वा अरा नाभौ समर्पिता एवमस्मिन्प्राणे सर्वँ समर्पितं प्राणः प्राणेन याति प्राणः प्राणं ददाति प्राणाय ददाति प्राणो ह पिता प्राणो माता प्राणो भ्राता प्राणः स्वसा प्राण आचार्यः प्राणो ब्राह्मणः ॥ १ ॥

7.15.1 — prano va aashaya bhuyanyatha va ara nabhau samarpita evamasminprane sarvan samarpitam pranah pranena yati pranah pranam dadati pranaya dadati prano ha pita prano mata prano bhrata pranah svasa prana aacharyah prano brahmanah || 1 ||

'Spirit (prâna) is better than hope. As the spokes of a wheel hold to the nave, so does all this (beginning with names and ending in hope) hold to spirit. That spirit moves by the spirit, it gives spirit to the spirit. Father means spirit, mother is spirit, brother is spirit, sister is spirit, tutor is spirit, Brâhmana is spirit.

'प्राण आशा से अधिक है। जैसे नाभि में अरे (चक्र की तीलियाँ) समर्पित होती हैं, वैसे ही इस प्राण में सब कुछ समर्पित है। प्राण प्राण से जाता है, प्राण प्राण को देता है, प्राण के लिये देता है। प्राण ही पिता है, प्राण माता, प्राण भाई, प्राण बहन, प्राण आचार्य, प्राण ब्राह्मण।'
