Chandogya Upanishad 8.48

न वधेनास्य हन्यते नास्य स्राम्येण स्रामो घ्नन्ति त्वेवैनं विच्छादयन्तीवाप्रियवेत्तेव भवत्यपि रोदितीव नाहमत्र भोग्यं पश्यामीति ॥ २ ॥

8.10.2 — na vadhenasya hanyate nasya sramyena sramo ghnanti tvevainam vichchhadayantivapriyavetteva bhavatyapi roditiva nahamatra bhogyam pashyamiti || 2 ||

Nor struck when it (the body) is struck, nor lamed when it is lamed, yet it is as if they struck him (the self) in dreams, as if they chased him. ​He becomes even conscious, as it were, of pain, and sheds tears. Therefore I see no good in this.

'यह शरीर-वध से मारा नहीं जाता, न शरीर के लंगड़े होने से लंगड़ा होता है। फिर भी मानो लोग इसे स्वप्न में मारते हैं, इसे पीछा करते हैं; यह प्रिय-विहीन-सा होता है, रोता भी है। अतः इसमें भी मैं उपभोग-योग्य कुछ नहीं देखता।'
