Guru Granth Sahib 1.20

ਭਰੀਐ ਹਥੁ ਪੈਰੁ ਤਨੁ ਦੇਹ ॥ ਪਾਣੀ ਧੋਤੈ ਉਤਰਸੁ ਖੇਹ ॥ ਮੂਤ ਪਲੀਤੀ ਕਪੜੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਦੇ ਸਾਬੂਣੁ ਲਈਐ ਓਹੁ ਧੋਇ ॥ ਭਰੀਐ ਮਤਿ ਪਾਪਾ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ॥ ਓਹੁ ਧੋਪੈ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ॥ ਪੁੰਨੀ ਪਾਪੀ ਆਖਣੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਣਾ ਲਿਖਿ ਲੈ ਜਾਹੁ ॥ ਆਪੇ ਬੀਜਿ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਖਾਹੁ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਆਵਹੁ ਜਾਹੁ ॥੧੯॥

bhareeai hath pair tan deh. paanee dhotai utras kheh. moot paliti kapar hoi. de saaboon laeeai oh dhoi. bhareeai mat paapaa kai sang. oh dhopai naavai kai rang. punni paapi aakhan naahi. kar kar karnaa likh lai jaahu. aape beej aape hi khaahu. naanak hukami aavahu jaahu.

When the hands and the feet and the body are dirty, water can wash away the dirt. When the clothes are soiled and stained by urine, soap can wash them clean. But when the intellect is stained and polluted by sin, it can only be cleansed by the Love of the Name. Virtue and sin are not mere words; we carry our deeds with us. We reap what we sow. O Nanak, by the Hukam of God's Command, we come and go in reincarnation.

हाथ-पैर-शरीर मैला हो, तो जल से धुल जाता है। कपड़ा मूत्र से अशुद्ध हो, तो साबुन से धुल जाता है। पर जब बुद्धि पाप के संग मैली हो, तो वह नाम के रंग में ही धुलती है। पुण्य-पाप मात्र शब्द नहीं — कर्म करके जो लिखा, वह साथ जाता है। स्वयं बोते हो, स्वयं खाते हो। हे नानक, हुक्म से आना-जाना होता है।
