Guru Granth Sahib 1.22

ਪਾਤਾਲਾ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਲਖ ਆਗਾਸਾ ਆਗਾਸ ॥ ਓੜਕ ਓੜਕ ਭਾਲਿ ਥਕੇ ਵੇਦ ਕਹਨਿ ਇਕ ਵਾਤ ॥ ਸਹਸ ਅਠਾਰਹ ਕਹਨਿ ਕਤੇਬਾ ਅਸੁਲੂ ਇਕੁ ਧਾਤੁ ॥ ਲੇਖਾ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਲਿਖੀਐ ਲੇਖੈ ਹੋਇ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਵਡਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪੁ ॥੨੧॥

paataalaa paataal lakh aagaasaa aagaas. orhak orhak bhaal thake ved kahan ik vaat. sahas athaarah kahan katebaa asuloo ik dhaat. lekhaa hoi ta likheeai lekhai hoi vinaas. naanak vadaa aakheeai aape jaanai aap.

There are nether worlds beneath nether worlds, and hundreds of thousands of heavenly worlds above. The Vedas say that you can search and search for them all, until you grow weary. The scriptures say that there are 18,000 worlds, but in reality, there is only One Universe. If you try to write an account of this, you will surely finish yourself before you finish writing it. O Nanak, call Him Great! He Himself knows Himself.

पाताल के नीचे पाताल, आकाशों के ऊपर लाखों आकाश। अंत को खोजते-खोजते वेद थक गए, एक ही बात कहते हैं। कितेब (शास्त्र) कहते हैं अठारह हज़ार लोक — पर मूल-तत्त्व एक ही है। यदि हिसाब हो तो लिखा जाए; हिसाब करते-करते स्वयं समाप्त हो जाओगे। हे नानक, उसे बड़ा कहो — वह स्वयं ही अपने आप को जानता है।
