Katha Upanishad 4.1

पराञ्चि खानि व्यतृणत्स्वयम्भूस्तस्मात्पराङ्पश्यति नान्तरात्मन् | कश्चिद्धीरः प्रत्यगात्मानमैक्षदावृत्तचक्षुरमृतत्वमिच्छन् ॥

paranchi khani vyatrinat svayambhus tasmat parang pashyati nantaratman | kashchid dhirah pratyag atmanam aikshad avritta-chakshur amritatvam ichchhan ||

The self-existent one pierced the openings of the senses outward; therefore one looks outward, not within the Self. But a certain wise one, desiring immortality, turned his gaze inward and saw the Self within.

स्वयम्भू ने इन्द्रियों के द्वारों को बाह्य-मुखी बनाया; इसलिए (जीव) बाहर की ओर देखता है, अन्तरात्मा की ओर नहीं। कोई विरला धीर अमृतत्व की इच्छा रखता हुआ दृष्टि को पीछे मोड़कर प्रत्यग्-आत्मा को देखता है।
