Kena Upanishad — Chapter 4: Section 4: Uma Reveals Brahman

9 verses

Verse 1

In that very space he came upon a woman, most beautiful — Uma, daughter of Himavat. He asked her: 'What was that Spirit?'

Verse 2

She said: 'It was Brahman. In the victory of Brahman indeed you were glorying.' Then from her words he knew it was Brahman.

Verse 3

Therefore these gods — Agni, Vayu, and Indra — surpass the other gods, for they came nearest to touching Brahman, and they first knew It was Brahman.

Verse 4

Therefore Indra surpasses the other gods as it were, for he came nearest to touching Brahman; he first knew It was Brahman.

Verse 5

This is the teaching about Brahman with regard to the gods: it is as if lightning flashed — Ah! — and the eye blinked — Ah!
