Prashna Upanishad 1.9

संवत्सरो वै प्रजापतिस्तस्यायने दक्षिणं चोत्तरं च | तद्ये ह वै तदिष्टापूर्ते कृतमित्युपासते ते चान्द्रमसमेव लोकमभिजयन्ते | त एव पुनरावर्तन्ते तस्मादेत ऋषयः प्रजाकामा दक्षिणं प्रतिपद्यन्ते | एष ह वै रयिर्यः प्रत्यक् ॥

samvatsaro vai prajapatis tasyayane dakshinam chottaram cha | tad ye ha vai tad ishtapurte kritam ity upasate te chandramasam eva lokam abhijayante | ta eva punar avartante tasmad eta rishayah prajakama dakshinam pratipadyante | esha ha vai rayir yah pratyak ||

The year is Prajapati; its two paths are the southern and the northern. Those who worship through sacrifice and pious works, thinking 'this is what we have done,' win only the lunar world. They return again. Therefore those sages who desire offspring take the southern path. This indeed is Rayi, matter.

संवत्सर ही प्रजापति है; उसके दो अयन हैं — दक्षिण और उत्तर। जो लोग 'हमने यह इष्ट-पूर्त किया' — इस भाव से उपासना करते हैं, वे चन्द्रलोक को ही प्राप्त करते हैं और पुनः लौट आते हैं। इसलिये प्रजा की कामना करने वाले ये ऋषि दक्षिण मार्ग को अपनाते हैं। यह पितृयान ही रयि है।
