Prashna Upanishad 3.5

पायूपस्थेऽपानं चक्षुःश्रोत्रे मुखनासिकाभ्यां प्राणः स्वयं प्रातिष्ठते मध्ये तु समानः | एष ह्येतद्धुतमन्नं समं नयति तस्मादेताः सप्तार्चिषो भवन्ति ॥

payupasthe'panam chakshuh shrotre mukhanasikabhyam pranah svayam pratishthate madhye tu samanah | esha hy etad dhutam annam samam nayati tasmad etah saptarchisho bhavanti ||

In the organs of excretion and generation dwells Apana. Prana itself is established in the eye, ear, mouth, and nose. In the middle is Samana — it distributes equally the food that is offered. From it arise the seven flames.

गुदा एवं उपस्थ इन्द्रियों में अपान स्थित है; चक्षु, श्रोत्र, मुख और नासिका में स्वयं प्राण स्थित है; मध्य में समान है — वही खायी हुई आहुति-रूप अन्न को समान रूप से विभाजित करता है। उसी से ये सात अर्चियाँ (अग्नि-ज्वालायें) उत्पन्न होती हैं।
