Tao Te Ching 11.1

三十輻共一轂，當其無，有車之用。埏埴以為器，當其無，有器之用。鑿戶牖以為室，當其無，有室之用。故有之以為利，無之以為用。

san shi fu gong yi gu, dang qi wu, you che zhi yong. shan zhi yi wei qi, dang qi wu, you qi zhi yong. zao hu you yi wei shi, dang qi wu, you shi zhi yong. gu you zhi yi wei li, wu zhi yi wei yong.

Thirty spokes share a single hub; it is the empty space at the centre that makes the wheel useful. Clay is shaped into a vessel; it is the empty space within that makes the vessel useful. Doors and windows are cut in the walls of a room; it is the empty spaces that make the room useful. Therefore, being provides what is profitable; non-being provides what is useful.

तीस अर नाभि में मिलते हैं — बीच के रिक्त से ही चक्र उपयोगी बनता है। मिट्टी को गढ़कर पात्र बनाया जाता है — भीतर के रिक्त से ही पात्र उपयोगी बनता है। दीवारों में द्वार और खिड़की काटे जाते हैं — भीतर के रिक्त से ही कक्ष उपयोगी बनता है। इसलिए 'है' से लाभ मिलता है, 'नहीं है' से उपयोग मिलता है।
