Tao Te Ching 12.1

五色令人目盲；五音令人耳聾；五味令人口爽；馳騁畋獵，令人心發狂；難得之貨，令人行妨。是以聖人為腹不為目，故去彼取此。

wu se ling ren mu mang; wu yin ling ren er long; wu wei ling ren kou shuang; chi cheng tian lie, ling ren xin fa kuang; nan de zhi huo, ling ren xing fang. shi yi sheng ren wei fu bu wei mu, gu qu bi qu ci.

The five colours blind the eye. The five tones deafen the ear. The five flavours dull the palate. Racing and hunting drive the heart mad. Rare goods lead people astray. Therefore the sage attends to the belly and not the eye. He lets go of that and chooses this.

पाँच वर्ण नेत्र को अंधा कर देते हैं; पाँच स्वर कान को बहरा कर देते हैं; पाँच रस जीभ को स्वादहीन कर देते हैं; दौड़-भाग और शिकार हृदय को उन्मत्त कर देते हैं; दुर्लभ वस्तुएँ आचरण को बिगाड़ देती हैं। इसलिए संत उदर के लिए जीता है, नेत्र के लिए नहीं; वह उसे त्याग कर इसे ग्रहण करता है।
