Tao Te Ching 19.1

絕聖棄智，民利百倍；絕仁棄義，民復孝慈；絕巧棄利，盜賊無有。此三者以為文不足，故令有所屬：見素抱樸，少私寡欲。

jue sheng qi zhi, min li bai bei; jue ren qi yi, min fu xiao ci; jue qiao qi li, dao zei wu you. ci san zhe yi wei wen bu zu, gu ling you suo shu: jian su bao pu, shao si gua yu.

Abandon saintliness and discard wisdom, and the people will benefit a hundredfold. Abandon benevolence and discard righteousness, and the people will return to filial piety and kindness. Abandon cleverness and discard profit, and thieves and robbers will disappear. These three, regarded as mere refinements, are not sufficient. Therefore let the people have something to hold on to: reveal simplicity, embrace the uncarved block, reduce selfishness, and diminish desires.

साधुता छोड़ो, प्रज्ञा त्यागो — तो प्रजा शतगुणा लाभ पाएगी। दया छोड़ो, धर्म त्यागो — तो प्रजा पितृ-भक्ति और वात्सल्य में लौटेगी। चातुर्य छोड़ो, लाभ त्यागो — तो चोर-डाकू न रहेंगे। ये तीनों — परिष्कार के नाम पर पर्याप्त नहीं हैं, इसलिए प्रजा को कुछ पकड़ने को हो: सादगी को देखो, अनगढ़ काष्ठ को धारण करो, स्वार्थ को कम करो, कामनाओं को अल्प रखो।
