Tao Te Ching 24.1

企者不立；跨者不行；自見者不明；自是者不彰；自伐者無功；自矜者不長。其在道也，曰餘食贅行。物或惡之，故有道者不處。

qi zhe bu li; kua zhe bu xing; zi jian zhe bu ming; zi shi zhe bu zhang; zi fa zhe wu gong; zi jin zhe bu zhang. qi zai dao ye, yue yu shi zhui xing. wu huo wu zhi, gu you dao zhe bu chu.

Those who stand on tiptoe do not stand firm. Those who stride cannot walk far. Those who display themselves do not shine. Those who justify themselves are not distinguished. Those who boast have no merit. Those who glorify themselves do not endure. From the standpoint of the Tao, these are like leftover food and excessive baggage. All creatures find them repugnant. Therefore one who possesses the Tao does not dwell in them.

जो पंजों पर खड़ा होता है वह दृढ़ नहीं खड़ा रह सकता; जो बड़े डग भरता है वह दूर तक नहीं चल सकता; जो स्वयं को दिखाता है वह देदीप्यमान नहीं है; जो स्वयं को सही ठहराता है वह प्रसिद्ध नहीं है; जो स्वयं की बड़ाई करता है वह सिद्ध नहीं है; जो स्वयं का गर्व करता है वह टिकता नहीं है। दाओ की दृष्टि में ये बचे हुए भोजन और अनावश्यक बोझ के समान हैं — सब जीव इनसे घृणा करते हैं। इसलिए जो दाओ को धारण करता है, इनमें नहीं रहता।
