Tao Te Ching 25.1

有物混成，先天地生。寂兮寥兮，獨立而不改，周行而不殆，可以為天下母。吾不知其名，字之曰道，強為之名曰大。大曰逝，逝曰遠，遠曰反。故道大，天大，地大，王亦大。域中有四大，而王居其一焉。人法地，地法天，天法道，道法自然。

you wu hun cheng, xian tian di sheng. ji xi liao xi, du li er bu gai, zhou xing er bu dai, ke yi wei tian xia mu. wu bu zhi qi ming, zi zhi yue dao, qiang wei zhi ming yue da. da yue shi, shi yue yuan, yuan yue fan. gu dao da, tian da, di da, wang yi da. yu zhong you si da, er wang ju qi yi yan. ren fa di, di fa tian, tian fa dao, dao fa zi ran.

There was something formless and complete, born before heaven and earth. Silent and void, it stands alone and does not change. It moves everywhere and is never exhausted. It may be regarded as the mother of all under heaven. I do not know its name, so I style it the Tao. Forced to give it a name, I call it the Great. Being great, it flows. Flowing, it reaches far. Reaching far, it returns. Therefore the Tao is great. Heaven is great. Earth is great. And the king is also great. Within the realm there are four great things, and the king is one of them. Humanity follows the earth. Earth follows heaven. Heaven follows the Tao. The Tao follows its own nature.

कोई एक वस्तु आकार-रहित और पूर्ण थी, जो आकाश और पृथ्वी से पहले जन्मी थी। निःशब्द और रिक्त, अकेली खड़ी रहती है और बदलती नहीं; सर्वत्र संचरित होती है और थकती नहीं; उसे समस्त संसार की माता माना जा सकता है। मैं उसका नाम नहीं जानता, इसलिए उसे 'दाओ' कह देता हूँ; विवशतावश नाम देना पड़े तो उसे 'महान' कहता हूँ। महान वह जो बहता जाए; बहता हुआ वह जो दूर तक जाए; दूर जाता हुआ वह जो लौट आए। इसलिए दाओ महान है, आकाश महान है, पृथ्वी महान है, और राजा भी महान है। जगत में चार महान हैं, और राजा उनमें से एक है। मनुष्य पृथ्वी का अनुसरण करता है, पृथ्वी आकाश का अनुसरण करती है, आकाश दाओ का अनुसरण करता है, दाओ अपनी स्वाभाविकता का अनुसरण करता है।
